Expectations of Generic Bachelor of Science Nursing Students: A Qualitative Research

The aim of this study was to assess the expectations of the nursing students enrolled in the Generic Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programme in Nursing Campus Maharajgunj, Institute of Medicine. A mix research approach was adopted to explore the subjective expectations among 98 respondents. Unstructured Instructional Guideline was used for gathering the expectations from this BSN programme on the day of the enrollment.
Qualitative data analysis was used to examine the obtained data. In the first phase of data analysis, 28 concepts were identified. Open coding, relational coding and supra coding were done to obtain a declarative theme. The findings of the study revealed that respondents were motivated to take nursing career as the scope of nursing is expanding: there are better opportunities for higher education and can do specialization to become professional nurses. They had chosen nursing career for acquiring cognitive as well as psychomotor skills for providing humanistic care in all health delivery settings. They were enthusiastic to learn care related components which would enable them
for supporting the ill as well as well people in the communities and societies. It can be concluded that as there were congruencies between the expectations of students with the goals of BSN programme, hence they would be successful professional nurses in providing humanistic care to the people wherever they work.
